Sustainable development is a pattern of resources that aim to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met, not only in the present but also for generations to come. Sustainable development ties together concern for the carrying capacity of natural systems with the social challenges facing humanity.
Sustainable development is an eclectic concept, as a wide range of view fall under the same umbrella.
People concerned about sustainable development suggest that meeting the needs of the future depends on how well we balance social, economic and environmental objectives when making decisions today. Most people would like to live in a sustainable community, but they cannot afford to do so because current business models encourage activities that do not take into account future problems. Sustainable development creates long term economic stability, but does not create short-term profits , its a long term plan. Governments, businesses and consumers all need to change their habits for sustainable development to grow. By co-operating in this way, we can all look forward to a green future !!
Week 12 – Last blog of a very interesting semester to say the least.
What as a community are we giving to the next generations ? , thats a question we must ask ourselves as our lives go on. Im going to focus on the community aspect , to keep a sustainable communtiy functioning means recognising when it needs new blood , a fresh face. New faces means new topics and ideas. Would you an Eco-village is an example of a sustainable community ? ,yes i believe it is as the whole communtiy strive for a one goal or desire , and new fresh families are joining them in this goal , so i would say this is been sustainable. Their building a community for the future generations.
Sustainability is good business from the social, economic and environmental perspectives. When tied into a communities vision sustainable development can resolve successfully many key issues faceed by communities today. Sustainable community planning and development can provide direction by asking what communities should achieve; by initiating a goal-orientated process of planning and development.
The most important step toward meeting a sustainable community is simply to raise sustainability as an issue. Sustainability should be a goal orientated process. But this can be controversial, According to Professor D.Sterman of the massachusetts institute of technololgy ” it questions the purpose of society and the relationship between humans and nature, and demands social justice and equity”
Although sustainability is controversial is it essential for guiding communites in the future!!
As i was sick on the eve of the trip to Cloughjordan , i missed out on a day that i regrettable missed. It took me this long to write a blog on it and naturally i had to surf the web, ask other students and read magazines about cloughjordan.
Cloughjordan ecovillage lies on 66 acres of land. What are Ecovillages ? , From its website, Ecovillages are urban or rural communities of people who strive to integrate a supportive social environment with a low impact way of life. To achieve this, they integrate various aspects of ecological design, permaculture, ecological building, Green production , alternative energy and many more.
The village aims to offer a place where it can down-size the institutions that provide housing, waste disposal, food etc.
The people of cloughjordan are unique that they each share a common goal , They know eachother extremely well unlike a normal town or village. They are very close. The people are very upbeat and positive even in these hard times were going through. The live a sustainable lifestyle and their immense communtiy spirit enables them to achieve many goals.
Maybe someday they can change it from an Ecovillage into an Ecotown , are someday maybe even ECOCITY!
A floating ECOCITY
Public Policy Process- Sustainable development must remedy social iniquities and environmental damage, while maintaining a sound economic base. The problems are that their is no quick fixes or simple solutions, problems may never be solved definitively or contradictory changing requirements. Also Stakeholder shave different views and different inderstanding of problem. Public policy is the sum of government activities that have an influence on the lives of citizens. Public policy decisions determine who get what, why, when and how. They take affect through Laws, Services, Finance , Taxes etc.
Public Policy making can be as complex as the challenges it attempts to resolve. The policy cycle approach is a useful framework to make sense of the policy making. Its imperfect as it masks its complexity.
Perhaps the greatest danger to sustainable development is the tranformation of the process through which public policy is created.
Never the less , sustainable development requires such a system of governance to manage the affairs of individual citizens to insure that social equity and environmental protection are integrated into all economic acitivity.
A week which introduced us into sustainabilty metrics! , now when the term Metrics come my way , i feel like running as its a hard topic on Maths , but i braved it out to understand the meaning of sustainable metrics. SDI (sustainable development indicators) have the potential to turn the generic concept of sustainability into action. Although they are influenced by different political beliefs about the nature of the good society. SDI processes are underpinned and driven by the increasing need for improved quality and regularly produced information with better spatial and temporal respolution, I found out this from wikipedia.
It is hard and difficult to measure sustainability due to its social and economic impact and the difficulty of choosing indicators.
As we seen in the lecture, by translating the concept of sustainable development into numerical terms which are simple to understand, indicators can be used to raise environmental awareness among the public, as well as to strengthen public support for policy makers.
We were also told that it is important to distinguish indicators form measurements or statistics. Although indicators rely on measurements and statistics as a starting point, comprehensive indicators contain measurements, trends in measurements over time, roles and contributions of various stakeholders and specific targets.
week 9 – My god this week was difficult , i never did business , tend to stay away from it ha! , so it was no surprise that i didnt have a clue what was going on at the start of the week.
I hit me that CSR is about how businesses align their values and behaviour with the expectations and needs of stakeholders, customers, investors, employeesd, suppliers, communities.
CSR demands that businesses manage the economic, social and environmental impacts of their operations to maximise the benefits and minimise the downsides.
Case study- McDonalds CSR efforts-
Mcdonalds are doing great work related to their sustainable supply chain. Within their latest CR report , they featured their newest progressive effort to continuously improve the sustainability of their supply chain. They created a committe called the SLMC ( Sustainable land management commitment). Basically the SLMC requires that, over time, their suppliers will only use agricultrural raw materials for their food and packaging that originate from sustainably-managed land. How they will achieve this vision will evolve over time, their starting with focused and tangible actions across five product categories identified by the world wildlife fund. The five product areas are beef, poultry, coffee, palm oil and Fiber (in their packaging). They are tackling sustainability issues that are upstream, where the greatest impacts are generated. Over time Mcdonalds will begin to see great results.
So fair play Mcdonalds, Hopefully others will follow,
Im Lovin It! ! 🙂
